2011 Volleyball League ends, NVF Cup about to start

Last Saturday the final games of the 2011 Namibian Indoor Volleyball league were played and the top women- and men- teams secured their qualification for the prestigious NVF Cup that is taking off coming Friday evening.
For the UNAM Men’s team the league ended with only two lost games throughout the year and thus they forced the heavy favorites and last year’s NVF Cup winners, the Namibian Defence Force, onto the second rank of the league. This is especially remarkable as this was only the second time that the UNAM team participated in the local Volleyball league. The DTS managed to win 13 out of 18 games in the league and came third.
On the women’s side, the team from the Khomas Nampol Volleyball Club (KNVC) was convincingly strong throughout the season, and with that earned the first place in the league before the NDF women on the second place and the Revivals Volleyball Club (RVC) on the third.
The top five men teams in the 2011 volleyball league (and thus qualifiers for the NVF Cup 2011) are:

The annual cup of the Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF) is so popular because it features the best teams of the Namibian Indoor Volleyball scene. All teams that qualified receive a participation reward of N$ 1000 and the winner of the tournament can look forward to prize money of N$ 5000 and the ‘Annika-Moisel’- floating trophy.
The first game of the NVF Cup will be played on Friday evening (30th September) at 19:30 at the DTS sports grounds showing NDF vs. KNVC in the men’s category. On Saturday, we are then able to see matches throughout the day (men and women), starting with the opening ceremony at 09:00. The NVF invites visitors to participate in bets and other activities and an information desk will also be displayed for everyone who is interested to learn more about the sport and the local scene. Students are particularly welcome to attend the event and the school that is represented by the most visitors will receive a prize from the NVF.
The list of participating teams promises entertaining and exciting matches: the NDF women and men managed to take home the floating trophy in the last year, but this year they were beaten by the UNAM men and the KNVC women in the league. The men’s team from the DTS is entering for the first time and came third in the league, whereas the SKW was the winner of the NVF Cup 2009. With this close competition, the NVF Cup surely is a sports event not to be missed for all volleyball enthusiasts in Namibia.

NDF take the lead in NVF Cup - Mon, 03/10/2011
The Namibian Defense Force (NDF) Men’s team took an early lead after the first weekend of matches in the NVF Cup. NDF, the defending champions beat SKW on Saturday, after they already took points against Khomas Nampol Volleyball Club(KNVC). Although KNVC won the match by 3 sets to 2, the NDF team was declared winner as Nampol had made use of an unregistered player.
The NVF Cup is Namibia’s most prestigious volleyball tournament which takes place over three weekends during October. Only the top five men’s teams and top four ladies teams qualified to participate in this exciting competition.
On Saturday the games took place throughout the day on the Sports grounds of the DTS Sports Club. The results are as follows:
Men:
10:00 DTS Men beat UNAM 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-10)
16:30 NDF Men beat SKW 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-15)
Women:
12:30 NDF women beat DTS 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-9)
14:30 NAMPOL women beat Revivals 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 25-12, 25-23)
The next game will be played on Friday, October 7 at 19h30, featuring DTS against KNVC. On Saturday, games will take place from 10h00 until 17h00 again at the DTS.

25 October 2011 SKW second in NVF Cup
WINDHOEK – Finally the champions of the Namibia Volleyball Federation Cup 2011 are official after the final games ended in a celebratory mood and electrifying action between the giants of indoor volleyball in the domestic league.
In a supreme performance, the men’s team of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) overpowered this year’s outdoor league champions Unam, to claim the NVF Cup for the second time in a row. The match started off on equal footing, which was reflected in the constantly fluctuating scores (25:22, 26:24, 25:14).
The students still managed to keep up the fighting spirit after losing one player to injury, but as soon as the soldiers started to gain momentum, the men in uniform were unstoppable. Motivated by a strong choir of their vocal supporters, NDF dominated the game with harmonious team play and fast, efficient attacks. NDF player and vice-president of the Namibia Volleyball Federation, Joel Matheus, stated in a speech during the closing ceremony: “The standard was very professional and I hope to see the same level in the premier league next year.”
The champions in the women’s competition proved to be equally outstanding contestants. Gold medalists KNVC (Khomas Nampol Volleyball Club) entertained spectators with high-quality volleyball when they faced defending champions NDF. Owing to the professional performance of Elina Veijo, KNVC slowly but surely defined their grip on the game. Veijo, who was later nominated “best spiker of the tournament”, continually placed strong and safe spikes onto the other side of the net and was well supported by clear settings of her teammates. She said after the match: “I am overwhelmed and glad for my selection as best spiker.”

Heiko Diehl, president of the NVF, said he was satisfied with the standard of the whole tournament. “The tournament was well organized, everything ran according to schedule and it was great to see the effort every player and team brought to the game. It was fun to play and watch,” stated Diehl. The overall atmosphere of the tournament was friendly and supportive. The fans enjoyed the entertainment of the competition and encouraged their teams with singing and rhythmic clapping, relentlessly. The NVF Cup is a tournament of Namibia’s elite, but the final weekend of matches proved it was not only a celebration of the teams but much more a celebration of the game.
With that, the NVF Cup 2011 brought the sport a good step closer to reaching the vision of the Namibian Volleyball Federation, which is to promote volleyball in the country and make it the No. 1 sport in Namibia.
